Design
14 is a tall standing clock about seven feet
high (not including pendulum) and sixteen inches wide at the base. It is a
limited edition work of eighteen pieces. It is currently the only limited
edition work
available from Brendan Reilly. All the older designs have sold out, but photos
of them are available in the “archive” section.
Design 14 can be transported in most automobiles after removing the weights and pendulum. Leveling pads at the base allow it to adapt to any floor. It is relatively simple to disassemble and set up; instructions are included, and no tools are required.
Brendan will personally deliver and set up Design 14 purchases without charge in Southern Ontario, Canada, in an area south of Barrie and west of Oshawa, including Toronto, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Windsor. Outside of this area, a charge will apply. Contact Brendan for pricing.
Description:
In terms of clockwork, the design is very simple, with only two wheels in the power train (most mechanical clocks have four or five). It makes use of nine ball bearings in critical locations to reduce wear and friction and to provide long, maintenance free operation. It is designed for a life measured in centuries.
Woods: The frame is black walnut (top and bottom), with oak or ash vertical members. The works (wheels, etc.) are laminated Baltic birch, which is dimensionally stable. The hands are nogal, a South American hardwood. The dial is a polished brass ring with nogal markers.
Pendulum: Taking a slow two and a half seconds to make a swing, this pendulum is of the vertical compound type with a bob at each end. The bobs are fused glass covering a lead weight.
Weights and winding: The mechanism is hand wound with a key every eighty hours. The system used is the endless loop type invented by the Dutch scientist Huygens in the seventeenth century. This system maintains power to the clock while it is being wound.
Escapement: This mechanism keeps the pendulum in motion. It is a variation of the Graham deadbeat type commonly used in grandfather clocks, but he has used tiny rollers as pallets to reduce friction and wear.
All designs and design concepts used in Design 14 are original to Brendan Reilly. Every component of these works was hand crafted by Brendan.
