What is a clockwork sculptor?
Brendan Reilly is a different kind of artist. He designs and builds clockwork
mechanisms as works of art. He uses wood and glass to make gears, frames, hands,
and dials, and all of the arcane parts that make up a working clockwork mechanism.
His goal is to bring out the beauty latent in all mechanical clockwork.
He makes clockworks
on a grand scale, with gear wheels three feet (90 cm) or more in diameter.
And he leaves the clockworks entirely open to view; no case obscures
the action.
A clockwork sculpture is a living thing, always in motion. Pendulums rock, levers
work, and wheels turn as time is kept. This is not static art.
One-of-a-kind commissioned works are site-specific designs, custom built.
They can be any size or shape.
Limited edition designs are constructed as a set of no more than twenty-four
pieces. After they are built, the design will never be repeated.
All of them are weight-driven mechanisms regulated by pendulums of various
kinds.
Please take some time to explore this site and see what surprising things
can be done with the machines we call clockwork.
